Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson spoke to the September 2026 PV Democrats meeting. He discussed international affairs and the Iran conflict. Col. Wilkerson is one of the most preeminent authorities on the US military, international affairs and domestic politics in the United States today.

For our August 2026 meeting, Judge Tom Long returned to lead our annual discussion of the recently concluded 2025-26 Supreme Court term. Tom is a longtime PV Democrat, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, and former two-term Mayor and City Councilmember of Palos Verdes Estates. Tom examined the Court's most significant opinions, explained the legal reasoning behind them, identified the philosophical divisions among the Justices, placed the decisions in historical context, and explored what they are likely to mean for our democracy, our institutions, and our daily lives.

The event celebrated the Palos Verdes Democrats' long history of civic engagement while emphasizing the importance of Democratic organizing and participation in the 2026 elections. The club's president described the organization as having served the Peninsula for 74 years and emphasized democracy, equality, justice, and civic engagement as its core values. 

Dr. Timothy Lyons, a keynote speaker and distinguished professor of biogeochemistry at University of California, presented his research career. He also discussed the urgent need to address climate change, presenting data on rising CO2 levels and global temperatures, emphasizing that 2024 was the world’s warmest year on record.

The PV Democrats hosted our May meeting featuring three speakers—Heather Hargreaves, campaign manager for Tom Steyer's gubernatorial campaign, Alfred Tom, content creator exposing political issues, particularly focusing on Leonard Leo's network of organizations, and Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

Our April 2026 meeting featuring four speakers covering environmental issues, public health, international relations, and local government.

Katie Porter, a former U.S. Congress member, discussed her candidacy for California governor. Acclaimed Author and Journalist Sasha Abramsky discussed the creation of the fictional Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Professor Steve Posne discussed potential Republican strategies to delay and deny Democratic seats in the upcoming Congress

Dr. Paul D'Anieri, a political science professor at UC Riverside, discussed the origins and current state of the war in Ukraine. He explained that Russia's refusal to accept Ukraine's independence dates back to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, with Russian leaders consistently seeking to reclaim Ukraine.

Tamminen is President and CEO of AltaSea, a nonprofit blue economy hub at the Port of Los Angeles. The blue economy advances sustainable growth through oceans, fisheries, coastal resources, and marine technology, complementing the land-based green economy.

At our November meeting, Dr. Pape discussed the rise and danger of political violence in American politics.

Our October 2025 club meeting featured Robert Weiner, whose distinguished career reflects decades of service at the highest levels of American law and government. Mr. Weiner discussed the current state of voting rights in America, examining both the threats that imperil democratic access and the strategies available to ensure an inclusive and fair electoral system.

The Board of Directors for the Palos Verdes Democrats joins with the California Democratic Party in endorsing Proposition 50.
