President’s Report

By Robert Wynne

At the April meeting for our club, our speaker journalist Gil Duran referenced an important statistic. Duran noted that if 3½ % of the population of any country ruled by a dictator engages in public protest, that's usually enough to topple an autocratic regime.

With Trump refusing to honor the Constitution, claiming he "doesn't know" if it applies to him, while at the same time deporting citizens and non-citizens alike without due process, the U.S. is heading toward dictatorship. (Without even mentioning Trump's edicts to randomly assess tariffs that are pushing us into a recession.)

On Saturday May 3, the Palos Verdes Democrats joined Indivisible and other local clubs at Torrance City Hall to protest Trump's policies. More than 3,000 concerned citizens showed up to hear Congressman Ted Lieu and other speakers.  Joining the Palos Verdes Democrats allows you to hear great speakers like Gil Duran, Ted Lieu, journalist Michael Hiltzik, Rick Wilson from the Lincoln Project and many others. We also keep you informed about local protests and events, including our Annual Picnic coming up in July.

Now is the time to get involved and stay involved. Let's be part of the 3.5% to make a positive change in our city, California and America..

April 2025 Club Meeting Report

By Tim Dixon

Gil Duran

On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Journalist Gil Duran was the keynote speaker at the Palos Verdes Democrats meeting.  Mr. Duran is an American journalist based in San Francisco. Mr. Duran has also worked in political communications, serving as a spokesperson and strategist for prominent figures such as Governor Jerry Brown, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Attorney General Kamala Harris. He currently writes the FrameLab Newsletter and The Nerd Reich and regularly contributes to various publications, including The New Republic.

In his remarks, Mr. Duran provided his perspective on the relationship between Donald Trump. Elon Musk and other technology giants and how this is impacting America. Last year, Mr. Duran wrote a five-part series for The New Republic on the agenda of technology billionaires to dismantle our government and attack our democracy. Mr. Duran discussed this agenda which advocates that democracy is outdated and needs to be replaced with billionaires in control. Mr. Duran reviewed the efforts to implement this agenda by the Trump Administration, which includes replacing government employees with artificial intelligence, consolidation of power and control of data and voter suppression. He also discussed efforts to use government as a tool for misinformation and questioning the integrity of elections.

Mr. Duran also reviewed ways that citizens can fight back. He cited an academic study that concluded that historically when 3½ % of the citizens are taking to the streets and protesting, no totalitarian regime has withstood that kind of public pressure. Mr. Duran stated that we are already seeing protests above that threshold and that we may see upwards of 10-15% protesting when the impacts of the Trump tariffs are felt.

He also encouraged our members to write and engage with our elected leaders, demanding that they fight back as well as writing to the mainstream media demanding that they cover and report on these issues. Following his remarks, the members present engaged in an informative question and answer session.

Al Sattler

Al Sattler, the Vice Chair and Political Chair for the Palos-Verdes-South Bay Regional Group of the Sierra Club joined us at the meeting and spoke about Earth Day and environmental issues. Mr. Sattler has been a Sierra Club activist since 1980, and he has worked on several environmental issues, including air pollution, global warming, and coastal protection, and volunteered on the campaigns of several pro-environmental candidates for public office. Al spoke about the important anti-pollution laws that were passed since the first Earth Day in 1970, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Toxic Substances Control Act, as well as the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Mr. Sattler stated that because of these laws, our air and water have become much cleaner. Mr. Sattler also discussed how this environmental improvement that we have worked so hard for is under threat from the Trump administration. Mr. Sattler provided the members with a comprehensive review of environmental progress as well as the threats we face.

From the Activism Chair

By Caryl Schwartz

Where to begin, Trump’s corruption? Dismantling of government institutions that Americans depend upon for public health and safety. The fact our country is currently entering a state of competitive authoritarianism.  I will conclude the newsletter with opportunities for Activism to oppose the regime. I want to thank everyone who showed up to the May 3rd inspirational rally.

The conflicts of interests and evidence of corruption in the Trump administration is overwhelming.  It’s about self-enrichment at the expense of our great country.  At a Dubai crypto conference, Eric Trump and Trump ally Zach Witkoff (Steve Witkoff’s son) announced a $2 billion deal involving a Trump stablecoin and a UAE state-backed fund. The deal ties Trump’s private crypto venture to foreign governments and Binance, a firm under U.S. legal scrutiny. Trump continues to openly profit from foreign government deals while in office, erasing the line between presidential power and personal enrichment. It’s corruption in broad daylight—with global actors buying influence through his crypto empire. Source: New York Times

The Trump Organization has signed a new deal to build a luxury golf resort in Qatar in partnership with Saudi and Qatari firms, despite Trump’s ongoing presidency. Trump is cashing in on foreign policy, ignoring conflict-of-interest rules while cutting deals that benefit Saudi royals and his businesses—more blatant pay-to-play corruption at the highest level. Source: Associated Press

A new D.C. group, the American Growth Partnership, is launching as a MAGA-aligned association. Founded by ex-GOP and Trump campaign aides, it will offer exclusive access to Trump appointees like FTC and FCC leaders, with membership fees starting at $50,000. This is pay-to-play influence peddling rebranded—Trump allies are building a shadow lobbying. Meanwhile, founding member David Sacks serves as Trump’s crypto czar, further blurring the lines between state power and private wealth. Source: Politico

I found Trump’s answer on Meet the Press about whether there is a Constitutional guarantee of due process that he has a duty to uphold, “I don’t know, I have brilliant lawyers who tell me what I can do," to be very disturbing. I interpret that as calculated public announcement that he believes he is not bound by his oath of office or the Constitution and will continue to push every boundary to enrich himself and his cohorts, privatize government services and agencies and continue to abduct individuals legally in our country.   Gil Duran’s comments at last month’s meeting were highly informative and I encourage those that weren’t there to watch it on our You Tube Channel. video from our conversation with Gil Duran

Oppose the Save Act:

The SAVE Act is a confusing, costly, and dangerous proposal that would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. It would eliminate online voter registration in most states and shut down the voter registration drives that many communities rely on. This bill would hit millions of Americans—including seniors, veterans, students, women, and rural voters—especially hard. https://www.mobilize.us/commoncause/event/758610/

Notes from the LACDP April Meeting

By Jon Munoz

The LACDP meeting was held on Tuesday April 8th. There were three special guests at the meeting. Mayor Karen Bass, running for re-election, gave a rousing speech urging members to not sign any petition pertaining to the recall effort against her. The reasoning was that there have been very misleading petitions circulating. It was noted that the recall, financed by a billionaire, would take place six months prior to next year’s election and therefore a waste of time and taxpayer money.

Sheriff Robert Luna, who is also running for re-election as LA County Sheriff,  mentioned some positive crime statistics while he has been LA Sheriff and spoke out against the recall effort.

Lastly Chris Kluwe, former NFL player turned anti-MAGA activist from Huntington Beach, thanked the members for their support. The only official resolution put forth was a resolution opposing the recall effort against Karen Bass. There was an unofficial resolution which called for creating a Trump Fight Back Task Force. While most members agreed that the Democratic party needs to be more aggressive in countering Trump’s policies, the resolution was shot down as the task force would violate too many LACDP bylaws. It was announced that at the JFK Awards,  the Profile in Courage recipient,  would be given to actor/activist Sean Astin. The awards are being held Thursday May 22nd at the Greek Theatre.

The next LACDP meeting will be held on Tuesday May 13th.
